Foot and Ankle Orthopedic Surgery

Foot or ankle pain can affect nearly every part of daily life, from walking and working to skiing, hiking, running, and enjoying time with family. Holy Cross Medical Center provides access to fellowship-trained orthopedic foot and ankle surgeons who evaluate and treat injuries, arthritis, deformities, and complex conditions affecting mobility.

Our orthopedic specialists offer both surgical and non-surgical treatment options. When surgery is appropriate, advanced foot and ankle procedures are performed here in Taos at Holy Cross Hospital.

Specialized Foot and Ankle Care

Every patient’s condition, lifestyle, and recovery goals are different. Our surgeons begin with a careful evaluation and consider conservative treatment options whenever appropriate. If surgery offers the best path toward improved function, they work with each patient to develop an individualized treatment plan.

Foot and ankle services include:

  • Total ankle replacement
  • Ankle arthroscopy, a minimally invasive surgical procedure
  • Treatment of sports-related injuries and ankle instability
  • Achilles tendon rupture repair
  • Treatment of chronic Achilles tendon conditions
  • Foot and ankle arthritis treatment
  • Foot and ankle fracture care
  • Treatment of persistent problems following a fracture
  • Flat foot correction
  • High arch, or cavus foot, correction
  • Bunion correction
  • Tendon repair and reconstruction
  • Revision surgery for failed procedures or persistent symptoms

Conditions We Treat

An evaluation with an orthopedic foot and ankle surgeon may be appropriate when pain, weakness, instability, or limited movement interferes with work, recreation, or everyday activities.

Our surgeons evaluate and treat conditions including:

  • Ankle arthritis
  • Foot arthritis
  • Achilles tendon tears and ruptures
  • Chronic Achilles tendinitis and tendon problems
  • Ankle instability
  • Cartilage injuries
  • Sports-related foot and ankle injuries
  • Foot and ankle fractures
  • Post-traumatic conditions
  • Bunions
  • Flat feet
  • High arches and cavus foot deformities
  • Tendon injuries
  • Complex foot and ankle deformities
  • Persistent pain following a previous procedure

Total Ankle Replacement

Severe ankle arthritis can cause chronic pain, stiffness, swelling, and difficulty walking. When conservative treatments no longer provide adequate relief, total ankle replacement may be considered.

During total ankle replacement, damaged portions of the ankle joint are replaced with an artificial joint designed to reduce pain while preserving ankle movement. An orthopedic evaluation can help determine whether ankle replacement, ankle fusion, or another treatment may be appropriate for your condition.

Ankle Arthroscopy

Ankle arthroscopy is a minimally invasive procedure that uses a small camera and specialized instruments to examine and treat problems inside the ankle joint. Depending on the condition, it may be used to address cartilage injuries, inflammation, scar tissue, bone spurs, or certain causes of persistent ankle pain and instability.

Because every injury is different, your surgeon will discuss whether arthroscopy or another treatment approach is most appropriate.

Achilles Tendon Care

The Achilles tendon plays an essential role in walking, climbing, running, and jumping. Injuries can range from chronic irritation and degeneration to a complete tendon rupture.

Treatment depends on the location and severity of the injury, the patient’s activity level, and other individual factors. Options may include immobilization, rehabilitation, or surgical repair and reconstruction.

Foot and Ankle Reconstruction

Structural conditions such as flat feet, high arches, complex deformities, and post-traumatic changes can affect alignment and place additional stress on the foot and ankle.

Reconstructive surgery may be considered when a structural condition causes persistent pain, instability, difficulty walking, or loss of function that has not improved with conservative care. Treatment is individualized to restore alignment, improve function, and support the patient’s mobility goals.

Revision Foot and Ankle Surgery

Some patients continue to experience pain, instability, limited movement, or other problems following a previous procedure. Revision surgery may be an option when an earlier treatment has not produced the intended result or when a condition has changed over time.

Revision procedures require careful evaluation of the original condition, previous treatment, current imaging, and the patient’s symptoms. Our surgeons provide evaluations for complex and persistent foot and ankle conditions, including second opinions.
