Hip Replacement & Orthopedic Surgery
Advanced Care for Hip Pain, Arthritis and Joint Conditions
Hip pain can make it difficult to walk, work, sleep, exercise, or remain independent. Holy Cross Medical Center provides access to experienced orthopedic surgeons who diagnose and treat hip arthritis, structural conditions, cartilage and labral damage, and tendon or soft tissue injuries.
Treatment options include non-surgical care, hip arthroscopy, joint-preserving procedures, and minimally invasive hip replacement. When surgery is appropriate, procedures are performed here in Taos at Holy Cross Hospital.

Hip Conditions and Services
Hip pain may develop gradually because of arthritis or overuse, or it may follow an injury. Pain can be felt in the groin, outside of the hip, thigh, or buttock and may be accompanied by stiffness, weakness, catching, or reduced movement.
Hip services include:
- Minimally invasive hip replacement
- Hip arthroscopy
- Hip preservation surgery
- Treatment for femoroacetabular impingement, or FAI
- Hip labral tear treatment
- Hip arthritis treatment
- Cartilage injury treatment
- Tendon and soft tissue injury care
- Non-surgical treatment and rehabilitation planning
Minimally Invasive Hip Replacement
Hip replacement may be considered when arthritis or joint damage causes persistent pain and reduced mobility that has not improved with non-surgical treatment.
During hip replacement, damaged portions of the joint are replaced with artificial components designed to restore smoother movement and reduce pain. Minimally invasive approaches may use smaller incisions and tissue-preserving techniques when appropriate.
Your surgeon will determine whether hip replacement is suitable based on your condition, overall health, activity level, previous treatments, and goals.
Hip Arthroscopy
Hip arthroscopy is a minimally invasive procedure that uses a small camera and specialized instruments to examine and treat certain conditions inside the joint.
Depending on the condition, hip arthroscopy may be used to address:
- Labral tears
- Femoroacetabular impingement
- Cartilage injuries
- Loose fragments within the joint
- Other structural causes of hip pain
Not every hip condition can be treated arthroscopically. An orthopedic evaluation can determine whether arthroscopy, another joint-preserving treatment, or hip replacement may be appropriate.
Hip Preservation Surgery
Hip preservation procedures are intended to treat the source of pain while maintaining as much of the natural joint as possible. These procedures may be considered for younger or active patients with structural problems who do not yet require joint replacement.
Treatment may address FAI, labral damage, cartilage injuries, or other conditions that interfere with normal hip movement.
Hip Tendon and Soft Tissue Injuries
Hip pain does not always originate inside the joint. Tendons, muscles, and other soft tissues surrounding the hip can also become injured or irritated.
Treatment depends on the affected structure and severity of the condition. Options may include activity modification, medication, injections, physical therapy, rehabilitation, or surgical repair.
Non-Surgical Hip Care
Many hip conditions can initially be treated without surgery. Conservative treatment may include:
- Activity modification
- Medication
- Therapeutic injections
- Physical therapy
- Strength and mobility exercises
- Rehabilitation planning
Surgery may be considered when symptoms substantially affect daily life or when non-surgical treatment has not provided sufficient improvement.

What to Expect
Your first appointment will focus on your symptoms, medical history, previous treatments, and goals. Your surgeon may review existing imaging or recommend additional diagnostic testing.
Treatment does not always require surgery. If surgery is recommended, your surgeon will explain the procedure, recovery process, potential benefits, and possible risks so you can make an informed decision.
Most patients do not need a referral, but requirements vary by insurance plan. If you are unsure, call 1-888-758-0009 to confirm whether your plan requires one.
Schedule a Hip Evaluation
You do not have to let persistent hip pain keep you from the activities that matter to you. Schedule an evaluation to learn more about your condition and the surgical and non-surgical treatment options available in Taos.
