Holy Cross Medical Center (HCMC) is investing in the future of local healthcare by building strong pathways into the profession, starting with its Medical Assistant (MA) Training Program. Designed for individuals with a high school diploma or GED and a desire to work full time in healthcare, the program provides a structured, supportive path into one of the most in-demand roles in medicine. For many at HCMC, it has served not only as a first step but a long-term career launchpad.
A medical assistant plays a crucial dual role in clinics and provider offices. MAs combine administrative and clinical responsibilities, preparing charts, rooming patients, taking vital signs, drawing blood, collecting specimens, and assisting with medications and minor procedures. They set up sterile environments and ensure providers have what they need for efficient patient care. In many ways, MAs are the backbone of clinic operations, blending compassion with technical skill.
According to Tracy Sawyer, Director of Nursing and Clinic Operations, the Medical Assistant program is intentionally built to open doors for people who may have interest but no prior experience in healthcare.
“For anyone exploring a medical career, our MA program is truly one of the best entry points,” Sawyer explained. “You are employed full time, earning a paycheck, and at the same time completing the coursework needed to become a Certified Clinical Medical Assistant. What makes this program special is that you learn hands-on, seeing procedures, learning the language of medicine, and understanding how a clinic really functions. It gives you a strong foundation for many other paths in healthcare.”
HCMC’s program combines online coursework such as medical terminology, anatomy, pharmacology, and phlebotomy with hands-on clinical training. Participants work full time while completing their classes and must earn their CCMA certification within six months. After two years of full time commitment, graduates emerge with skills, experience, and a nationally recognized credential.
The career ladder is well established. MA I employees can advance to MA II, then to Lead MA, and beyond. The growth opportunities are proven. At least seven current Holy Cross employees began as medical assistants, using the role as a springboard to advance within the organization while staying in the community.
Amelia Espinoza, Pediatric and Cardiology Clinic Supervisor, described her own journey. “I actually started out as a CNA back in 2004,” she said. “My first job was at TCCY when Dr. Villarreal still owned the clinic. I became a Certified MA in 2007, then an EMT-B and eventually an EMT-I.” For those considering the MA path, Espinoza is clear and encouraging. “Becoming a Certified Medical Assistant and educating yourself in that way is invaluable to your future and your career. I hope people take advantage of the MA program here at HCMC. It is a wonderful opportunity for anyone interested in joining the clinics.”

The program is also proving successful for new graduates. Michaela Stone, the most recent MA program graduate now working with Holy Cross Women’s Health, shared how transformative the program has been. “The education portion was clear, hands-on, and incredibly supportive,” she said. “Balancing work, school, and motherhood was not always easy, but it was absolutely doable because the providers and clinic staff were so committed to helping me succeed. Everything I learned in class showed up immediately in my day-to-day work, which made the training feel practical and empowering.” Her advice for others considering the program is simple and motivating.
“You do not have to know everything. You just need the willingness to learn. This program gives you real experience, real skills, and the confidence to step into healthcare. It can genuinely change your life if you are willing to show up for it.”
Holy Cross is currently seeking two new Medical Assistants, and the organization emphasizes that no previous medical experience is required. Only commitment, curiosity, and a desire to grow are needed. Certification, Sawyer added, demonstrates both competency and dedication.
For those hoping to build a meaningful career in healthcare while staying rooted in Taos, the Holy Cross Medical Assistant Training Program offers an accessible, supportive, and proven pathway forward.
